Irish National Moto-X Championships - 11/09/2004

Amidst mud, rain and motorbikes, our vehicle deployed to Ballykelly in Northern Ireland for the moto cross championships. Thanks to the EBU for the work, feeds to Geneva were syndicated acrooss Europe via EUTELSAT W3. Gigatel are ideally situated to access Ireland, being 20 mins from Holyhead fast-ferry port, and have an excellent working relationship with local OB companies and broadcasters. Cariad@Iaith / Love4Language - 23/03/2004

Gigatel have just completed an intensive seven-day OB for a live celebrity ‘lock – in’ in a remote Welsh language learning centre. Celebrities including Janet Street-Porter, Ruth Madoc and Paralympic athlete Tanni Grey-Thompson were under constant TV scrutiny for a week as they underwent an innovative crash-course in Welsh. In a mixture between ‘Big Brother’ and ‘I’m A Celebrity’ the cameras were both in their homes as well as the classroom! Live programmes were screened on S4C nightly and transmitted by Gigatel. An ambitious OB facility was provided by Barcud, and Fflic produced the highly original programme – all on the site of a previously deserted quarrying village at the foot of some very steep cliffs; the home of the National Welsh Language Centre in Nant Gwrtheyrn, North Wales. A 24 hour webcast was also provided by Actionstream. Only a handful of satellites were even visible from this remarkable location, and when the snow threatened to close the location on the last day, the entire OB was moved in a matter of hours to an alternative location in what must have been one of the most heroic efforts in broadcasting! Well done to all!

Spectacular OB -The Snowdon Race - 23/07/2005

Hundreds of runners competed in this landmark race to run up and down the highest mountain in Wales and England. An extraordinary event in itself, it was covered live for the first time for S4C. The producers ‘Cwmni Da’ were set an ambitious challenge in covering the whole spectacle. Many radio-linked cameras covered the mountain stages with a helicopter providing breathtaking aerial shots. A radio-linked quad-bike followed the lower stages. Gigatel provided two satellite links – one directly to S4C, the other to its fixed receive site at Caernarfon for editing purposes at Barcud facilities. High quality ISDN comms circuits were also provided by Gigatel for the OB. Thanks to the fine weather the whole project exceeded expectations. If would like to broadcast the event next year on your network too, or would be interested in a news release please contact information@gigatel.co.uk.
